| Thai Wildlife > Gibbons & Monkeys |
Thailand has a wealth of native primate species, from the White-handed Lar and Pileated Gibbons to many different long and short tailed Macaques and Langurs. A once common pet, these primates have been rescued by the authorities and now number in their thousands. Gibbons especially are sensitive to disease and need specialist care whilst in captivity.
Although considered endangered, wild populations are still significant but this doesn't reduce the need to study their behavior and breed some species in captivity while maintaining conservation work in nationwide wildlife sanctuaries. Primates in captivity need branches to swing on and covered areas to sleep in while their health needs constant monitoring.
