Thai Wildlife > Bears

Thailand has 2 native species of bear; the Asiatic Black Bear and the Malayan Sun Bear.Asiatic Black Bear The Black Bear is bigger, has a pronounced white "V" on its neck and is found all over the country while the Sun Bear is smaller, more aggressive and more commonly found in the southern region of Thailand.

Although the law prohibits it, bear cubs are common pets and older bears have been poached for their gall bladders and paws to be used in traditional Asian medicines. Many bears have been rescued from this trade, about 150 in Thailand and 20 in Laos so far. These animals require veterinary services, better diets, and continual enrichment of their captive environments.
