ThailandAsian Elephant is home to many domesticated Asian elephants, all of whom have been born and raised in captivity for hundreds of years as beasts of burden. A smaller number of wild elephants remain as well but their native habitat is dwindling.

Dr Aleksija Neimanis and Pranee Thongnoppakun conducted a study of traditional herbal remedies for Elephants. See the report Traditional Herbal Remedies for Thai Elephants for details of this study.

Domesticated elephants are owned by rural villagers who once put them to work in the logging industry. Such activities are now illegal in Thailand so elephants and their owners find work in many tourist camps that offer rides to foreign visitors. These elephants rarely receive veterinary services and are prone to sores, eye inflammations, foot problems and simple neglect.
