We are funded
on a project-by-project basis by international wildlife groups
and a small number of individual donors. While Thailand is a
developing nation and the population shows respect for both domestic
and wild animals, this enthusiasm is yet to reach a level whereby
donations for welfare and conservation activities are forthcoming.
International support is therefore vital.
Historically,
our society established itself by maintaining and further developing
Thailand's main Banglamung facility for confiscated bears in
cooperation with the state Department
of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, formerly
known as the Royal Forest Department. It was there during 1996
that the World Society for
the Protection of Animals designed and built the first large
semi-natural habitat enclosure for black bears.
WSPA has continued to fund the work at the Banglamung centre
and further funded new enclosures at Omkoi and Mae Hong Son in
Thailand's north, and more recently continues to fund the TSCWA's
Asiatic black bear reintroduction project.
In the past
financial support has also come from the organisations Care
for the Wild and Terre-et-Faune,
and two significant individual donors, one from Sweden and the
other British.
