Our society
assists wild animals that have been confiscated under existing
laws and kept in government facilities. These activities include
the building of large natural-habitat enclosures for bears, binturong
and large cats, islands for gibbons, and larger cages for macaques.
We also supplement feeding, provide veterinary treatment, and
study behaviour that assists in the moving and better mixing
of the animals.
This work occurs in several Wildlife Centres operated by the
Department of National Parks, Wildlife & Plant Conservation,
formerly known as the Royal Forest Department. There are 20 centres
nationwide, the largest of which is located in the Banglamung
district of Cholburi province, 150km southeast of Bangkok.
At the Banglamung Wildlife Centre our society works with more
than 60 black bears and 30 sun bears held in three enclosures,
30 gibbons and 50 macaques. At the Pang Tong centre in the far
northwest of the country we support large and small cats, deer
and a wide variety of birds. This work has in the past extended
to other facilities in Chachoengsao and Sakaew provinces, and
in the only wild animal facility in Laos where rescued bears,
primates and cats were brought.
