Types of Wildlife

Wildlife as defined in the Wild Life Protection Act of 1992 includes all animals that live on land or in the water. They include those that fly as well as insects. This definition covers the eggs and young of these animals. However, this act does not include animals that have been registered as transport animals and their offspring.

The emphasis of this act is to protect the animals and their habitat and are classified as rare and protected wildlife.

Rare Wildlife
These type of wildlife are very rare or already extinct. The purpose of the protection of these animals is to prevent those living, the carcass, and any part of the animal to be sold outside of the country.

Protected Wild Life
These animals are protected by the law and are still relatively abundant in numbers. The purpose of protection is to prevent extinction. According to ministerial regulation, 189 species of mammals, 182 species of birds, 63 species of reptiles, 12 species of amphibians, 13 species of insects, 4 species of fish, and 13 species of invertebrae are protected.

Punishment

Rare and protected wildlife as defined by Act are prohibited to be imported or exported. This includes the living and carcass of the animal. Exceptions are made for animals that are sent for breeding such as the freshwater crocodile. Another exception is made for animals that are privately owned and registered before the Act.
