History of Wild Life Preservation and Laws Protecting Wild Life
In the early days there was only one law, the 119 RE Elephant Act (1900).
This was considered the first law that attempted to protect wild life. However, the protection was specific to elephants.
Later with a much larger population, people started to encroach into the forests. They entered with advanced weapons that helped them hunt animals. Thus, the number of wild animals dropped rapidly. This was a cause of great concern that many wild species might become extinct from Thai forests.
In 1960 the government announced the Wild Life Protection Act of 1960 and was signed by His Majesty the King. It was first conceived under the regency of the Princess Mother thus December 26 of every year became wild life protection day. The Wild Life Protection Act of 1960 has been used for over 30 years when it was realized that many the details could no longer be used to ensure the most effective protection of wild life. In addition Thailand had entered into many multi-lateral agreements on the issue of wild life protection. Therefore, a new Act was enacted on February 29, 1992.
